Are the calculators accurate?

They are planning tools built on published standards and plain geometry, and every page shows the formula it used so you can check the working. Where a figure is a hobby rule of thumb rather than a standard, such as minimum radius as a multiple of car length, the page says so plainly and points you at the manufacturer stated minimum instead.

What is the difference between scale and gauge?

Scale is the proportion of the model to the real thing, such as 1:87.1 for HO. Gauge is the distance between the rails, which for HO is 16.5 millimetres. They are independent: narrow gauge modelling uses full scale models on narrower track, and large scale uses several different proportions on the same 45 millimetre track, which is why two G scale models can be visibly different sizes and both be correct.

Which scale should I choose?

Measure the room first, then decide. The largest curve radius that fits is half the width less a margin, and that number tells you what equipment will run, which tells you the scale. N takes about a quarter of the area of HO for the same railroad. O is roughly three and a quarter times HO and is far more durable with children. The most common regret is committing to a scale before measuring.
